Christopher Columbus

Here is a little Columbus day activity we did this week. I am in love with this adorable Columbus unit by Kim Adsit.

Here is what we did last year.

I know this is an old post, but hopefully we've all learned something since then and are changing the conversation and lessons around Columbus - who was, unequivocally and unarguably, an extremely awful person who did a number of horrific things and is responsible for swathes of murder, enslavement, and atrocities. I encourage teachers to avoid perpetuating the weird myths that somehow have been reinforced about this historical figure, and find alternative activities for this day !

( For a very quick and easy reminder about why writing 'hero' next to Columbus' name should horrify you, see http://theoatmeal.com/comics/columbus_day )

The person who commented above is a communist. They have drank the “Kool Aid” and have turned into a fully blow pshyco. Hopefully this person does not teach children in Kindergarten this way, but probably does. I feel like from now on there should be a mandate stating teachers need to submit to a complete social media background check and have their curriculum checked by an anti-communist state Rep every 3 months. This is not ok. This is the reason why we have kids in the streets burning things down and ripping statues down. This teacher is teaching the real history of Christopher Columbus and I’m sorry to the other commentator, that they have been taught the wrong thing.
