fun on the farm!

Here is what we have been working on in kindergarten. We just finished up our farm and zoo unit. Here is our double bubble map of would you work on a farm or in the zoo? This idea came from Kim Adsit. The little farmers and zoo keepers are precious! If they wanted to work on a farm and in the zoo they added both a hat and bandanna.

 

At the end of  the unit we graphed our favorite farm animals. We practiced counting by 2's to find out the total.

After we learned about each farm animal we used interactive writing to write about what we learned.

These cute chicks are from Julie Lee's faces on the farm unit. I used them to learn about oviparous animals.

We also illustrated the definition in our science journals.

 

 We compared sheep to pigs. This is from Deanna Jump's fun on the farm unit. The sheep and pigs are also from Julie Lee.

 

cinco de mayo, earth day, and my farm unit

We made sombreros for Cinco de Mayo using paper scraps and dot markers. Then we attached them to a sentence strip to wear throughout the day.

For Earth day we made this chart and added all of the things we can do to take care of the earth. Then they made this little craftivity. You can download the writing here.

Farm fun

We finished learning all about the farm. It was a lot of fun and the kids loved it. I used Deanna Jump's Fun on the Farm unit and Julie Lee's faces of the farm activities.

After learning about sheep and pigs we compared the two animals.

We created cow glyphs from Deanna's unit.

We made a T-chart and listed what each animal gives us.

We graphed our favorite farm animal and analyzed the data. This is from my farm unit available on TPT.

We wrote a farm fact book from Mrs. Lee's faces of the farm activties.

Here are some thinking maps also found in my farm unit.

We made giant farm animals and wrote animal facts using interactive writing. This idea is from KinderbyKim. Her farm ideas are amazing.

 We read Mrs. Wishy Washy's Farm and wrote mud poems. Then they made Mrs. Wishy Washy. This idea was inspired by Julie Lee.

We have been working on asking questions. We used this chart by Kim Adsit while reading a nonfiction book about pigs. My kids came up with some great questions.

Here is my retelling rope from Castles and Crayons. We used this to retell The Very Busy Spider.

Then I paired the kids up and we made a flow map of The Very Busy Spider. They drew and water colored each animal and dictated to me their part of the story. Another idea from Mrs. Lee.

I used this poem (not written by me) and this book to teach my kids about oviparous animals.

Here is what we did with it . . .

We made this adorable chick from Julie Lee's Faces of the Farm activities and attached the sentence strip.

We glued the eggs poem into our science journals and illustrated oviparous animals.

Ok, I wish I could take credit for these but I can’t. Mrs. Lee posted pictures on her blog of her fun center activities. They looked so fun that I had to create my own version. Click the pictures to download.

The first activity is a build-a-clock. Copy onto colored card stock, laminate, and cut.




How much is the piggy worth. The kids count the money in the piggy bank.





For Barnyard addition run off six work mats and laminate. One of my scholastic books came with the cutest farm stickers. I was holding onto them just waiting for a good use. I put them on the work mats. Add up all the animals and record your answer on the sheet provided.




The next activity is for your pocket chart. Use the word cards and picture cards to make a sentence. You will need to print five copies to make five different sentences.

Farm unit

We have been working on Mrs. Jump's farm unit. Love all of her units! We did non-fiction writing, used a venn diagram to compare and contrast, graphed and analyzed the data, problem solved, and so much more. I love using themes to teach objectives. Plus, the kids really get into it. Here is what we have been up to. I still have a few more pictures to post so check back soon.
