Eric Carle and insects

This week we have been reading all of the fantastic "buggy" books by Eric Carle. We used the books to discuss the illustrator and adjectives. We reviewed what an illustrator does and how each illustrator has their own unique style. Then we illustrated insects like Eric Carle. They did fantastic!

After they illustrated, it was time to brainstorm some adjectives to describe their insect. They used the word web below for this activity. Then they picked one adjective to complete the sentence, "The very . . ."

mental images: green giant

We created mental images using the poem "Green Giant" by Jack Prelutsky. They created some pretty cute green giants. I read the poem several times while they created their mental image.

bugs!

Working on another one of Deanna's adorable units. We completed the insect glyph. The boys made caterpillars and the girls made ladybugs. And of course LOTS of writing.

Let me just brag here . . . I have a bunch of little smarties! Love them all. Just look at our think math.

This just makes me smile. One of my low babies started making a word web all on his own, just for the heck of it. LOVE it.
Happy hump day!

mental images

We are going to read Green Giant by Jack Prelutsky and create mental images. I'm excited to see what they end up creating. I wrote the poem on sentence strips and used it as our shared reading. The sentence strips later get made into a literacy station. You can have each child glue their mental image onto a sheet of construction paper along with the poem as seen here. Click below to download the poem.

You can download the poem here.

Earth day!

We watched a Brain Pop Jr. video on recycling. You can watch it free here. Then we brainstormed ways to take care of the Earth.

They made an Earth and glued on the Earth day poem.
"No job is too big,
No action is too small,
For the care of the Earth,
Is the task of us all."

The Earth was followed with the writing prompt, "I can make the Earth glitter . . ." Happy Weekend!! Don't you just love long weekends!

zoo continued . . .

Here is a cute activity my team member, Ms. Do, created. After reading The Hippo-not-amus we created a new zoo animal by combining three zoo animals. Then we discussed the adaptations. They loved it!!
This is a "on-bra-ir" It says, "Its mane protects him when he fights."
We created mental images using the poem My Neighbor's Dog is Purple. This came from Deanna Jump. And yes, they freaked when I read the last stanza and the dog was infact a crocodile. My mental images chart was inspired by Growing Kinders.
Giraffes and Zebras, too cute!
We discussed how they are similar and different.
We made alligator pie . . . and had a lot of fun with it. We read this fun poem. Glued it into our poetry journals.Interactive writing, how to make alligator pie. Then they each completed their own How to writing during writers' workshop.

It was yummy!
This is a fun syllable sorting game Deanna Jump included in her unit.
