space!

We had a fun space unit. We learned all about astronauts, our solar system, spaceships, aliens, the moon, and lots of big science words!

We graphed would you like to go to the moon? They colored a moon coin and placed it on the correct column. The cute little astronauts came from Babbling Abby.

We practiced counting back with this super fun song, climb aboard the spaceship. My kids loved acting out the song and shouting, "Blast off!" We also glued the song into our poetry journals.

We read lots of non-fiction books about space and recorded our new learning with this little recording sheet. They loved picking out a non-fiction book to find new facts.

Weather

Summer has arrived! I plan to update in the next few days all of the things we did up until the last day of school. First up . . . weather!

 

We made wind socks to observe wind direction and movement. We illustrated the wind socks with the types of weather.

We made ROY G. BIV to help us remember the order of the colors in the rainbow.

We learned all about clouds then had a little fun writing our sight words in "clouds."

 

We read, shapes in the sky, then we went outside and observed the clouds. Then we brainstormed adjectives that described the different types of clouds. We used our anchor chart to make cloud list poems and made these clouds and attached rainbow colored crepe paper.

 

We made cloud flip books. I had the kids create cumulus, cirrus, and stratus clouds out of cotton balls and label them in their books! You can get this download here from Crazy for First Grade. I saw this idea on The First Grade Parade.

 

 

Celebrate the Earth!

We had a lot of fun celebrating the Earth with The Lorax. We made this adorable Lorax art from prek and k sharing to wrap up our learning.

 We made dirt cups to celebrate the earth and did a little how to writing. These were so yummy!

We made a class book about what the earth gives us. This idea came from Chalk Talk.

After reading The Lorax we talked about how characters change. We added an entry into our reader's workshop journal about how the Once-ler changed.

We added this song to our poetry journal and wrote about how we could make the earth glitter.

We also did some Lorax math. I got the idea to set up our math problems like this from Kim Adsit.

insects

I can't even believe it is May! Summer is just around the corner. We wrapped up our insect study a few weeks ago. Check out what we've been learning about.

 

 

We illustrated and labeled the butterfly life cycle in our science journals.

 

We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and retold the story using the story props and retelling rope.

 

They got their own story props to use to retell and sequence the story. As requested the story props colored and black and white have been included in my insect unit available very soon on TPT.

 

We learned that insects have compound eyes. These activities are from Julie Lee and Deanna Jump.

 

 We illustrated our big science word in our science journals.

The Zoo!

We loved learning about the zoo! I used Julie Lee and Deanna Jump's zoo unit. I think the zoo animal faces created by Julie are so adorable. The kids loved making them and researching about each animal. The zoo keeper patterns are from my zoo unit.
