We had so much fun learning all about plants! I just love this spring time unit. Here are some of the things we did in our plant unit.
We read all about roots and seeds with these books from Pebble Books. Then we recorded all of our new learning and added it to our anchor chart.
We read the funny book Tops and Bottoms about a hare who tricks lazy bear to help his family. We followed up with this craft. We first painted the sky and soil and then added the veggies! We learned about what plants need to survive and followed up with this activity in our interactive notebook. They used words and pictures to tell what plants need.
After learning what plans need to survive we planted our own seeds! The kids loved painting the pots and drawing the labels.
We made a pollination flip book with puppets. While reading the story we used the puppets to act out pollinating the flowers.
Before our plant unit I presented our big science question to the kids. They were researching why do we need bees. We read lots of non fiction books and watched a few videos from Brain pop Jr. and then recorded what we learned. Sometimes I leave the I wonder section blank and let the kids come up with their own question to research.
We learned all about Dirt! This is a great book to read to get the scoop on soil.
We explored soil with our hand lens and recorded what we found.
After reading lots of non fiction books we discovered how important dirt is. We brainstormed what it would be like without dirt. We added this to our interactive notebook.
We recorded all of the things you can find in dirt and what dirt is made of in our science notebooks.
We made this cute craft to go along with the book we read.
We learned all about plant parts. I just happened to have a lot of flowers from teacher appreciation week so we sorted the parts into petals, leaves, and stems.
For this researcher's workshop our topic was roots and why do plants need roots?
We soaked bean seeds in water overnight. Then we peeled off the seed coat and used a hand lens to discover the baby plant and food.
You can find everything we did in the unit below. Check it out here.

Great ideas. Can you suggest how I can plan a unit on the life of a bee or an ant?
